USS Cairo 11090

Product Description

One of 7 Union ironclad gunboats that saw action on the Mississippi river and its tributaries, the USS Cairo was part of the Union plan to regain control of the lower Mississippi and split the Confederacy in two. On December 12, 1862, the Cairo was on the Yazoo River, north of Vicksburg when it became the first ship ever to be sunk by an electronically detonated mine, set off by Confederate soldiers on shore. She was salvaged in 1965 and can be seen today at Vicksburg National Military Park.
